Akhanda 2 OTT update: Balakrishna's film seals a unique deal with Netflix: 25% clause revealed

Balakrishna's Akhanda 2 is one of the most-awaited films in recent times and is all set to hit the screens on December 5, 2025. Netflix has acquired the digital rights to the film for a fancy price and will stream the action drama in the first week of January 2026.

Going back in time, we at OTTplay had already revealed how OTT platforms like Netflix have started dominating the game when it comes to locking theatrical release dates and offering lower amounts to makers if a film ends up as a flop. 

We also reported that a few OTT platforms have structured deals based on the hero’s market, his previous hits, the film’s box office collections, and audience response.

Well, the first film to come out with such a deal is Akhanda 2. We have now learned that Netflix has locked a deal that allows them to deduct 25% if the Balakrishna starrer flops at the box office. Similarly, if the film becomes a super hit, they will add 25% more and pay the makers a higher amount for the OTT deal.

This is a new model introduced by an OTT platform like Netflix. However, this deal has not gone down well with some in the industry, as they are unsure whether their films will click at the box office.

Gone are the days when producers spent lavishly on films, confident that they would recover most of their budget through OTT rights. Times have changed, and with major OTT platforms forming new rules based on star power and box office performance, the OTT space is no longer a safe bet for producers.

Akhanda 2 makers lock lucrative OTT deal

But the makers of Akhanda 2 are happy, as their main lead, Balakrishna, is in top form with back-to-back hits, and director Boyapati Sreenu has delivered only blockbusters with the star hero in the past. The makers have locked a record deal with Netflix and are currently in a safe zone.

Akhanda 2 is the sequel to the hit film Akhanda and features Samyuktha Menon as the female lead. Thaman has composed music for this film, which has Shama Khasim and several other noted Telugu actors in key roles. Stay tuned for more.
