Naslen-starrer Alappuzha Gymkhana, directed by Khalid Rahman, is gearing up for its OTT release on Sony Liv and OTTplay Premium on June 13, 2025, after a stellar run at the box office. The film won much appreciation for its comedy and vibrant boxing moments. From Naslen’s endearing performance to peppy music and sleek action, let’s check out the five reasons as to why you should watch the Malayalam film, Alappuzha Gymkhana, on OTT.
Khalid Rahman’s film opens with a bunch of failed plus-two students, who try their hands at boxing to secure college admission through sports quota. This idea leads them to the Alappuzha Gymkhana, where they train before heading to the state championship which truly tests their grit. The tale of laid-back lads, their romantic trysts and especially their bromance are the endearing features of the film, that will keep you smiling almost throughout the film, which hardly has any tear-jerking moments. Ratheesh Ravi’s dialogues too add to the zany tone of the film.
With Premalu, Naslen has already established that he can woo viewers with his charming performance. He takes it up a notch higher in Khalid Rahman’s film as Jojo Johnson is more confident than Sachin from AD Girish’s film, and goes after not one but three girls. His witty dialogues and the prep talks to his team are worth watching out for. He is well-complemented by Operation Java actor Lukman Avaran, Jan-e-Man actor Ganapathi, Sandeep Pradeep, and Anagha Ravi
As the action shifts to the state championship, Alappuzha Gymkhana brilliantly shockcases the boxing moments from the ring as the lads take on the better trained youths. These boxing portions have been well-choreographed and make for the more engrossing bits of the movie. Jimshi Khalid’s cinematography also deserves praise.
Not just the boxing moments, the songs too leave a mark, especially Panjara punch which focuses on Anagha Maya Ravi fights her way to victory. ‘Float like a butterfly and sting like a bee’ wouldn’t have got a better musical version, at least in Malayalam cinema. The Hatja song is another hit track from Vishnu Vijay’s peppy music.
Khalid Rahman is truly the driving force behind the movie, as the director, co-writer and co-producer of the movie. By weaving in sporting moments in an amusing tale with goofy but likeable actors, along with peppy music, he has been able to deliver a complete entertainer, which checks almost all the boxes.
Tune into OTTplay Premium on June 13, 2025, to watch Alappuzha Gymkhana.
