Alia Bhatt is receiving rave reviews for her debut production venture, Darlings. The film sees her essay the role of a victim of domestic violence who decides to take matters into her own hands to teach her abusive husband a lesson, with the help of her mother. The project also marked Alia’s digital debut and the actress recently opened up about the decision to release Darlings directly on OTT.

In conversation with India Today Alia revealed that the makers had always planned for Darlings to be an OTT release. The actress said that the decision was not taken during the pandemic, and they had all first met to discuss Darlings back in 2019. “From the very beginning, we said that this is that kind of film which on a platform like Netflix will be very good, for various reasons”, said Alia.

The actress spoke of the wide reach the OTT platform had, where viewers across 190 countries could see the film right from its release day. Alia said that the world has now become a much smaller place thanks to OTT platforms. Because of them viewers had easy access to a range of content that spans across languages like Korean, Spanish, South Indian languages and more. Calling it a ‘unique form of consuming content’, the actress said that gone were the days when people had to travel long distances or attend film festivals to catch a film’s premiere.

Alia talked about how Darlings was an intimate story of the characters and their journeys, and not a larger than life spectacle. Unlike her film Gangubai Kathiawadi, which she called a ‘spectacle’ that had to be seen in theatres first, Darlings was more of an intimate watch. The actress said that the latter was a film she wouldn't mind watching by herself either. She added that she was very happy about Darlings’ release on Netflix.
