Alia Bhatt and her mother Soni Razdan took to Instagram on Wednesday to celebrate Gangubai Kathiawadi becoming number one on Netflix.

Within a week, Gangubai Kathiawadi had risen to the #1 spot on Netflix's non-English film list, having been seen for 13.8 million hours and appearing in the Top 10 in 25 countries across the world. Among these countries are the United Kingdom (UK), South Africa, Canada, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), and others.

Alia Bhatt expressed her amazement at how a great story can find their own ways to reach new audiences, according to The Indian Express.

She went on to say that "streaming services like Netflix tear down boundaries of countries and languages, allowing tales to reach new audiences every day."

She also confirms that Sanjay Leela Bhansali is delighted with Gangubai's success in theatres and now on Netflix.

The story follows Gangu (Alia), who was sold into a brothel in Mumbai's Kamathipura, and is based on S Hussain Zaidi's book Mafia Queens of Mumbai.

Alia’s next film will be Brahmāstra, directed by Ayan Mukherjee and starring her husband Ranbir Kapoor. She will also appear in Karan Johar's Rocky Aur Rani Ki Prem Kahani, in which she will co-star with Ranveer Singh.
