Alia Bhatt starrer Gangubai Kathiawadi gets a new release date and the wait is almost over

After much delay, the release date of Gangubai Kathiawadi has finally been announced. Earlier, it was announced that the Sanjay Leela Bhansali directorial will hit the big screens on February 18, 2022. The makers of the Alia Bhatt starrer recently announced that Gangubai Kathiawadi is slated to be released in theatres on February 25, 2022.

Bhansali Productions took to their Instagram page and shared a post with a caption stating, "Witness her reign in cinemas near you on 25th February 2022. #GangubaiKathiawadi #SanjayLeelaBhansali @ajaydevgn @aliaabhatt @prerna_singh6 @jayantilalgadaofficial @penmovies @saregama_official."

Gangubai Kathiawadi is a biographical crime drama loosely based on the life of a real-life sex worker as described in S Hussain Zaidi's book Mafia Queens of Mumbai. Ganga (Alia), a young girl who was sold into prostitution by her admirer, is the protagonist of the film. 

As the story progresses, she emerges as a powerful person in the underworld and the famed madam of her brother in Maharashtra's red-light district of Kamathipura.

This is the first time Alia has teamed up with Bhansali. The shoot of Gangubai Kathiawadi kicked off in December 2019, and after a gap due to the coronavirus lockdown, the makers resumed the shoot and completed it in mid-2021.

Moreover, after a no-show in 2021, Alia is finally getting a theatrical release. Her last movie outing was Sadak 2 which premiered on Disney+ Hotstar in 2020.

Shantanu Maheshwari, Vijay Raaz, Seema Bhargava Pahwa, Indira Tiwari, and Varun Kapoor play supporting roles in Gangubai Kathiawadi. Special appearances by Ajay Devgn, and reports have it, Huma Qureshi, and Emraan Hashmi also feature in the film. Meanwhile, Maheshwari and Kapoor are making their movie debuts with the Bhansali film. 

The teaser for the film was unveiled in 2021, and now fans can't wait for the trailer to be out soon.
