Brahmastra seems to be the latest film that has come under threat of boycotts, after its lead star Alia Bhatt’s remarks earned her the ire of netizens. The actress’ recent remarks on nepotism were not well received by netizens it seems, and calls for a boycott of Brahmastra started to gain momentum on social media.

In conversation with Mid Day, Alia addressed the criticisms against her for being a ‘star kid’. Saying that there were two ways of dealing with the criticisms, Alia said one way was to prove her worth through her work. She said that she chose not to respond to the remarks verbally even though they made her feel bad. Alia believed that feeling bad was a small price to pay getting work that earned you love and respect.

The actress went on to say that she ‘had the last laugh’, after delivering successful films like Gangubai Kathiawadi. Speaking of how she used criticism to fuel her work, she said “I can’t keep defending myself verbally. And if you don't like me, don't watch me. I can’t help it”.

Alia had also added that she could not control where she was born or what her parents did. Acknowledging that some things did come easier for her, she said that she did put in a lot of hard work to be where she is today.

Alia’s remarks did not sit well with netizens, who began to criticise the actress for her statements. Many users called out the star for her ‘lack of humility’ and said that they would boycott her upcoming film Brahmāstra: Part One – Shiva. Some users also compared the actress’ remarks to similar comments made by Kareena Kapoor Khan about nepotism as well. Netizens had called for a boycott of the latter’s recent film, Laal Singh Chaddha, which ended up with a dismal run at the box office.

Brahmastra, directed by Ayan Mukerji, is slated for release on September 9. The film stars Ranbir Kapoor, Alia, Mouni Roy, Amitabh Bachchan and Nagarjuna in lead roles.
