Allu Arjun, the celebrated superstar of the Telugu film industry, had the first turning point of his acting career in 2004, with the massive success of the romantic action-comedy film Arya. The movie, which marked the Pushpa actor’s first onscreen collaboration with hitmaker Sukumar, emerged as the first major blockbuster in the careers of both its leading man and the director. The duo later collaborated on more projects, including Arya 2 and the Pushpa franchise.
Recently, Allu Arjun took to his official social media handles and penned a special note as Arya completed 20 years of its release. “20 years of Arya. It’s not just a movie … it’s a moment in time that changed the course of my life. Gratitude forever,” wrote the actor, who shared an iconic still from the movie. Later, he also shared some throwback pictures from the location of the film on social media, with a caption that read, “Sweet Memories.”

The Telugu superstar, who is also well-known for his acting skills, delivered a remarkable performance as the titular character, Arya, a happy-go-lucky guy who is willing to do anything and everything for Geetha (played by Anuradha Mehta), the girl he loves. Allu Arjun’s impeccable onscreen charm, acting skills, and dance moves made him an instant favourite not only in the Telugu states but also in Kerala, where the dubbed version of the film was released.
Instead of the age-old love stories in which the hero is always seen convincing the woman he loves to choose him, Arya presents a leading man who always prioritises the happiness of his lady love, no matter what. Instead of forcing her to choose him, Allu Arjun’s character Arya agrees to help her get together with her boyfriend Ajay (Siva Balaji), even though it causes him immense hurt in the process.
The celebrated filmmaker delivered one of the best works in his filmmaking career with Arya, which marked his directorial debut. Sukumar succeeded in creating a soulful romantic comedy that instantly connected with the audiences at a time when Telugu cinema was just getting used to mindless action flicks that lacked any logic. The director created a lasting impact with Arya, which remains one of the finest films in the genre in Telugu cinema.
