Again, the stars are aligning! Christopher Nolan's Interstellar will be playing in Indian theatres, including IMAX, again beginning February 7, 2025. Due to the IMAX release of Pushpa 2: The Rule, which stars Allu Arjun in the title role, Interstellar did not receive the same release window in India as it did in the rest of the world. However, the film is finally making its way back to India, bringing back memories of the adventure that defied space and time!
Christopher Nolan directed and Jonathan Nolan co-wrote the 2014 epic science fiction drama. It features Matthew McConaughey, Anne Hathaway, Jessica Chastain, Bill Irwin, Ellen Burstyn, and Michael Caine.
The film follows a crew of astronauts as they use a wormhole near Saturn to find a new home for humanity in a future where blight and starvation have devastated Earth. In the final moments of our planet's existence, a group of intrepid explorers sets out on the gravest quest of all: to probe the cosmos beyond our solar system in search of signs of extraterrestrial life.
The film stars Matthew McConaughey as Joseph "Coop" Cooper, a former NASA pilot who reluctantly takes up farming following the government's closure of the agency. He then becomes the lead pilot for the Endurance mission.
On the Endurance expedition, astronaut Anne Hathaway plays Dr. Amelia Brand, a NASA scientist and daughter of Professor Brand, whose job it is to explore other planets.
Jessica Chastain portrays Murphy "Murph" Cooper, Joseph's daughter and a future NASA scientist who collaborates with Professor Brand.
Jonathan wrote a draft of the screenplay in 2007, which Steven Spielberg originally planned to direct. Kip Thorne, a theoretical physicist, served as the film's scientific advisor, executive producer, and author of the companion book The Science of Interstellar. Prior to her passing, Lynda Obst had served as producer for this film.
Cinematographer Hoyte van Hoytema shot the film in 35 mm Panavision anamorphic and IMAX 70 mm. Interstellar features numerous miniature and real effects, in addition to some digital effects created by the studio DNEG.
On November 7, 2014, theatres began showing Interstellar. Released on film stock first, it later expanded to digital projector venues in the US. After its first theatrical run, the film earned $681 million worldwide, placing it as the tenth highest-grossing film of 2014. Reviews for the film were mostly good.
Interstellar won Best Visual Effects at the 87th Academy Prizes, among its many other honours. Five other categories nominated the film.
Interstellar celebrated its tenth anniversary by re-releasing in theatres on December 6, 2024, featuring digital and 70 mm IMAX projections. The film's total worldwide box office earnings reached $720 million, thanks to the re-release's $14 million weekend total. As of December 20, 2024, the film had earned $24.4 million globally, making it the highest-grossing IMAX re-release of all time. It had already surpassed the $200 million mark in the US with its re-release.
Interstellar is currently streaming on Netflix, Prime Video, and JioCinema (OTTplay Premium) in India.
