Mohanlal’s latest movie Alone, which marks his collaboration with hit filmmaker Shaji Kailas after a gap of over a dozen years, hit theatres on January 26. The lockdown thriller is an experimental film from the duo, who had previously worked together in blockbusters such as Narasimham and Aaraam Thampuran.

Alone, which is scripted by Rajesh Jayaraman, had gone on floors right after the pandemic lockdown in 2021. Shot entirely in and around an apartment complex in Kochi, the movie revolves around a motivational speaker named Kalidasan, who moves into a new apartment only to be haunted by the voices of its previous inhabitants, a mother and daughter. Kalidasan then takes it upon himself, during the pandemic lockdown, to find out the secrets they are trying to unveil and how their troubles are related to the other residents in the complex.

Though Mohanlal is the sole actor on screen, the film also has other stars lending their voices to the various characters, who take the plot forward. Prithviraj Sukumaran, Manju Warrier, Baiju Santosh, Renji Panicker, Shankar Ramakrishnan, Nandu, Siddique and Suresh Krishna are some of the actors who are also part of the movie, which is produced by Aashirvad Cinemas.

In an interview last year, Shaji Kailas had confirmed that Alone was made as a direct-to-OTT release. The makers, however, had changed their plans to give the film a short run in theatres before its streaming release.

Alone’s OTT rights have been bought by Disney+ Hotstar with Asianet buying its satellite rights. Disney+ Hotstar had also purchased the rights for Aashirvad Cinemas’ previous three Mohanlal-starrers that were made during the pandemic – Prithviraj’s Bro Daddy, Jeethu Joseph’s 12th Man and Vysakh’s Monster, which was the only other movie apart from Alone to have a theatrical release. Alone is expected to begin streaming on the platform in February 2023.

Rumours are also rife that Mohanlal’s next release – Barroz: The Guardian of D’Gama’s Treasure – will also begin streaming on Hotstar after its theatrical run.
