Imtiaz Ali-directed film, Amar Singh Chamkila, premiered on streaming last year. Starring Diljit Dosanjh in the lead role, the movie was based on the life of late Punjabi singer Amar Singh Chamkila. The biographical drama film opened to a thunderous response from audiences and critics. Nearly a year after its Netflix release, Imtiaz recently revealed why the movie started with Chamkila's death scene. For those unaware, he was shot dead on March 8, 1988.
During a latest episode of Game Changers, Imtiaz Ali reflected upon his film Amar Singh Chamkila's opening scene, which featured the singer's assassination. "Actually, I had written that this would happen, and then I thought, why did I write it? The good thing about this to me is that this is not a suspense film. I did not want his murder to become the prime aspect of the film," Imtiaz said.

The filmmaker added that he didn't want the film to be a crime drama. He wanted to make Amar Singh Chamkila as a 'music film'. "I wanted to get over with these events (Chamkila's tragic end) early on so that I could then concentrate, along with the audience, on looking at his love story with music," he revealed.
Imtiaz also explained that he didn't want the audiences to sit through the entire film and anticipate the singer's death. He wanted the viewers to enjoy Chamkila's exceptional music journey. "The viewer would have picked on the intrigue that something is going to happen, whether he will be killed or not. So, I wanted to take the audience’s mind off that thing," added Imtiaz.
Meanwhile, Amar Singh Chamkila, the Netflix film, featured Parineeti Chopra as Amarjot Kaur. The biographical drama was produced by Window Seat Films, Select Media Holdings LLP and Saregama.
