Prime Video, Amazon's streaming service, will start showing limited commercials in India on June 17, 2025, according to the company. This move follows a 2024 rollout that began in the US and a few other markets. Claiming that the ad volume will stay lower than what is generally seen on traditional TV and other streaming platforms, the business indicated that the shift is aimed at supporting continuing investment in content.
The current annual fee of a regular Prime membership in India is Rs 1,499, and this charge will not change with the addition of advertisements. On the other hand, members who prefer not to see commercials can purchase an ad-free experience. A new Amazon add-on that removes ads from streaming video costs Rs 699 yearly or Rs 129 monthly. On June 17, the same day that adverts begin to appear on the platform, this optional upgrade will also be available.
The other perks of being a Prime member, including being able to stream music from Amazon, expedited shipping, and access to Prime Reading, will not change. In addition, after these changes are implemented, users can terminate their membership and obtain a pro-rated refund through their account settings if they would rather not continue.
Various Amazon Prime membership tiers are available in India at the moment. Prime Video is not included in the Rs 399/year Prime Shopping Edition, which includes delivery and shopping advantages. With Prime Lite, which costs Rs 799 a year, you get access to Prime Video but can only stream in 720p and use two devices simultaneously. The basic membership includes full access to all Prime features and up to 4K streaming quality.
Users who want to watch 4K content without ads will now have to pay a total of Rs 2,198 per year, which includes both the regular membership and the new ad-free add-on. While this is pricier than JioCinema Premium, it is still less expensive than Netflix's 4K ad-free subscription (Rs 7,788 per year, or Rs 649 per month).
The original content, licensed films and series, live sports, and partner channels such as Apple TV+, Discovery+, and Lionsgate Play (watch Maria, The Hurt Locker, Singham) are all available on Prime Video, which is accessible on various devices, including computers, tablets, smart TVs, and smartphones.
