A few weeks ago, Malayalam star Fahadh Faasil in a touching note had mentioned that the team of Malik had unanimously agreed for a direct-to-OTT release for the big budget movie, which was initially supposed to hit theatres in April 2020. Now, we hear that Amazon Prime Video has bought the digital rights of the movie and will be announcing the film’s release date soon.

A source close to the film’s production team tells OTTplay that the streamer and the movie’s producer Anto Joseph will finalise the discussion today evening and announce the film’s release date either today or on July 1. The makers were keen on having a theatrical release for Malik, especially due to its period setting, sound and budget, adds the source.

Fahadh had earlier this year also announced a May 13 release date for the movie, which has him playing the role of a leader of a coastal region from the age of 20 to 57. However, the second wave of COVID-19 cases forced the producers to opt for an OTT release, with theatre reopening looking uncertain for the next two months as the cases continue to surge in Kerala.

The movie, which also has Nimisha Sajayan, Vinay Forrt and Joju George in pivotal roles, spans from the 60s to the present. It was shot in Lakshadweep, Thiruvananthapuram, Kanyakumari and extensively in Kochi, where a massive set was erected to show a region in the film that was led by Fahadh’s character Sulaiman.

Malik is helmed by Mahesh Narayanan, who teamed up with Fahadh for Take Off and C U Soon. Meanwhile, Prithviraj’s Cold Case is the latest Malayalam movie that is streaming on Amazon Prime Video.
