Filmmaker Atlee's previous movie Jawan has proven to be a gift that keeps on giving. Recently, he was honoured at an award ceremony for directing Jawan. While dedicating the award to Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan for providing him with an opportunity to work with him, he also took a moment to express his gratitude to Tamil superstar Thalapathy Vijay.

Atlee's winning streak

"I extend my gratitude to the Tamil audience and fans of Tamil cinema, and now I can say, fans across India. I am very happy about that. First, thanks to Shah Rukh Khan sir, who gave me the platform to prove myself, and to my actors for believing in my vision. Thank you Thalapathy Vijay sir, who really took me from my second film to the level where I am today," said Atlee in his winning speech.

Atlee also thanked his core crew members, including music composer Anirudh Ravichander, editor Ruben, and cinematographer G. K. Vishnu, for supporting him while making his maiden Hindi film.

The Thalapathy Vijay factor

Thalapathy Vijay played an instrumental role in helping Atlee achieve great success in a short span in the Tamil film industry. Vijay met Atlee on the sets of Nanban (2012), where Atlee was assisting director Shankar. Impressed by Atlee's working style, Vijay expressed his interest in working with him if he had scripts that suited him.

Atlee made a successful directorial debut with Raja Rani in 2013, and he roped in Vijay to play the lead role in his second movie, Theri. Atlee continued this winning collaboration with Vijay by delivering two more blockbusters: Mersal and Bigil.

Atlee's impressive box office strike rate made him a formidable director in the Indian box office, catching the attention of Shah Rukh Khan. After years of deliberation, Atlee made Jawan, which hit the big screens last year.

Starring Shah Rukh Khan in a double role, Jawan became the biggest Hindi hit last year. Jawan also features Nayanthara, Vijay Sethupathi, and Deepika Padukone, among others, in supporting roles.

Jawan is currently streaming on Netflix.
