Successful or not, actor-producer Nandamuri Kalyan Ram hasn’t lost his appetite for experiments over the years. While the first half of his career had him dabble with safe mainstream stories, the latter part of his filmography showcased his desire to venture into uncharted terrains. Om 3D, 118, Bimbisara, Naa Nuvve are enough examples to suggest that he’s not afraid of risks and he commits to his directors’ word fully if he trusts them.
Amigos, after the stupendous success of Bimbisara, is another attempt from Kalyan Ram to surprise audiences. It takes immense skill for a performer to don a triple role and the Pataas star, going by the promos of Amigos, has responded to that challenge with elan. It’s the first time in Telugu cinema that an actor is essaying a triple role and the characters aren’t on-screen brothers (separated at birth). They are just lookalikes with different approaches to life.
The trailer has created enough noise prior to its release and the slick action thriller has a premise that warrants the curiosity of viewers. The contrasting looks of Kalyan Ram, the remix of Enno Rathrulostayi, have contributed to the film’s buzz as well. It’s crucial for the film to perform well in the first week, for it faces competition from multiple releases from big banners next week - Sithara Entertainment’s Sir/Vaathi and Geetha Arts’ Vinaro Bhagyamu Vishnu Katha.
After a massy beginning to the year with Veera Simha Reddy and Waltair Veerayya, producers Y Ravi Shankar and Naveen Yerneni of Mythri Movie Makers display their taste for smart, new-age scripts with Amigos and have banked on a newcomer Rajendra Reddy to deliver the goods. Kannada actress Ashika Ranganath makes her Telugu debut with the same and the presence of composer Gibran is expected to be a huge boost for the background score.
Amigos, with its wacky theme surrounding doppelgängers and compelling trailer and a capable team, appears to have all the ingredients to please an entertainment-hungry audience. S Soundar Rajan has cranked the camera and Tammiraju is the editor. Brahmaji, Sapthagiri essay crucial roles too.
