The Kannada film Amruth Apartments, which marked the directorial debut of Gururaj Kulkarni, who had made Last Bus earlier, is a murder mystery set at an apartment complex in Bengaluru. The film had Tarak Ponnappa, Urvashi HV and Balaji Manohar in the lead, with Sampath Kumar, Seetha Kote and Manasa Joshi in pivotal roles.
In the film, Tarak played Vasu, a Kannadiga, and Urvashi was Sapna, a Bengali, who had been married for just about a year, the result of a hasty decision that they now regret. With only days to go to file their divorce petition and sort out their joint finances, the couple gets entangled in a murder investigation that happens in their apartment.
The major highlight of Amruth Apartments, until about mid-way is its normalcy. The chemistry between the couple, the way they speak to each other, their interactions with friends and acquaintances, etc. There are no bombastic over-the-top dialogues or machoism on display. Tarak, as Vasu, is just your everyday regular guy and that what makes him so likeable. But just as good or even a tad better is Urvashi as Sapna.
If you missed watching this film that captures the life of aspirational Bengalureans so beautifully on the big screen, you can now catch it on OTT. As of today, Amruth Apartments is streaming on Amazon Prime Video in India. The makers say that viewers across the globe should have access to it in a week’s time.
