The French film Anatomy of a Fall has received several nominations at the Oscars this year, including Best Picture and Best Director. Helmed by Justine Triet, the film tells the story of a woman who is accused of murdering her husband, and their blind son being the only witness. The film has garnered significant praise for its gripping narrative, compelling characters, and riveting performances. For today’s Now You Know Podcast we take a look at lesser-known facts about this critically acclaimed film.

  1. The film opens with an instrumental rendition of 50 Cent's P.I.M.P., featuring Snoop Dogg. This song is used to introduce the film’s first character, the dog named "Snoop."
  2. Messi, the border collie who portrays Snoop, became popular amongst fans and critics. Snoop received the Palm Dog at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival for his performance.
  3. Achieving the perfect bounce of the ball descending the stairs in the film proved challenging for the filmmakers. In order to control its speed and prevent it from rolling out of the frame, they applied a dog-friendly adhesive to slow it down.
  4. Discovering the right actor for the role of Daniel, the son, was inexplicably a tough task for the filmmakers. After returning empty-handed after an initial four-month search, they continued their quest for an additional three months until they finally cast Milo Machado-Graner. The young actor would then undergo intensive piano lessons to prepare for the role.
  5. Since the film revolves around the quest for truth, the writers refrained from incorporating traditional flashback scenes, apart from two instances. The quarrel scene and the car ride to the vet, are presented to the audience through the courtroom scenes using audio, either in the form of a recording or verbal recollection.
  6. The initial script for the film was written with actress Sandra Hüller in mind as the lead, to play the role of Sandra Voyter. However, Samuel Theis was cast in the role of the lead’s husband, Samuel Maleski after the script's completion. It is a coincidence that both actors share the first name of their respective characters.
