He’s been in the Kannada film industry for a decade and is all of 7 movies old, and yet, what one often hears about Vinay Rajkumar is about the variety in his choice of scripts, and the emphasis on quality content over commercial cinema tropes. Vinay, who is gearing up for the release of his next, Andondittu Kaala, which was launched 4 years ago, says that his filmography so far is not the result of a carefully charted out plan.

“I think it’s because I like the kind of cinema that I have been doing. Right now, it’s a beautiful balance that filmmakers also feel that I am cut out for the more offbeat story-telling, which is what I also lean towards. I have not made a conscious effort to hunt for such subjects – it’s been a more organic process, one that suits my cinematic sensibilities. It also helps in ensuring that there’s variety in the work I do,” said the actor, speaking to Kadakk Cinema.
The actor adds that while the core emotions in most films are the same, he does not like repeating himself, which allows him to explore the actor in him. “You discover a different side to you with every character, which is why I like doing a wide variety of roles,” says Vinay. As for how he goes about choosing them, the actor says that when he is at home in Bengaluru, he is, more often than not, getting script narrations.
“When you listen to multiple stories, you get an idea of the kind of work coming your way. Within that, I then look for those that leave a positive impact. For instance, if I remember certain scenes, which, I think will make me happy while performing, those are the scripts that I usually end up picking up. The first narration is always only with me. It is only at the next level that I use my brother Yuva or my father (Raghavendra Rajkumar) as sounding boards,” explains Vinay, adding that if he’s really in love with a subject, he sends it to a bunch of friends too to see if they too enjoy it as much as he does.
