Nayanthara starrer Annapoorani: The Goddess of Food released in the theatres on December 1, opening to mixed reviews from the audience and critics. Directed by Nilesh Krishnaa, the culinary drama was appreciated for the lead actors’ performances. However, the movie failed to garner a lot of attention due to other major releases on the same day - including Ranbir Kapoor’s Animal, Vicky Kaushal’s Sam Bahadur and Joju George’s Antony.

Annapoorani features actor Jai as the male lead. The plot revolves around Annapoorani (Nayanthara), who hails from an orthodox, upper-caste family and aspires to become a chef. But when she realises that this will also involve cooking meat, which is forbidden in her family, she keeps her passion a secret. Nevertheless, Annapoorani’s secret gets revealed after an accident. The film’s cast also includes Achyuth Kumar, KS Ravikumar, Sathyaraj and Redin Kingsley.

The Nayanthara film opened to generally positive reviews. However, it failed to lure audiences due to the other big releases on December 1. Annapoorani managed to collect ₹60 lakh on its opening day with 19.98% Tamil occupancy. That said, the culinary drama film is expected to earn decent numbers over the weekend across the southern states.

Nayanthara and Jai, who were last seen together in the 2013 film Raja Rani, reunite on screen in Annapoorani. According to Nilesh, it was Nayanthara who suggested bringing Jai on board. “Nayanthara ma’am suggested that Jai should play the role of Farhaan in the film,” said the director. Thaman has composed music for the movie, while Sathyan Sooryan has handled cinematography.
