After a delay of almost three years, Anoop Menon’s King Fish finally gets a release date. The movie, which was set to mark his directorial debut, will release in theatres across Kerala on September 16, the makers revealed.

This will now be his second directorial to hit theatres this year after Surabhi Lakshmi’s Padma, which released a few months ago. King Fish, which is also scripted by Anoop, has him and director Ranjith in the lead.

The makers announced the release date by unveiling a motion poster of the film featuring its lead characters. The movie had completed its post production almost three years ago and Anoop had organised select previews for the film for celebrities. Mollywood actors including Mohanlal had raved about the movie after watching it. The Aarattu actor had said that the film “has travelled a unique path and is full of light”.

The film, however, ran into financial trouble during the pandemic and its release was put on the backburner till now. King Fish, which also has Durga Krishna, Niranjana Anoop, Irshad, Divya Pillai and Nandhu, has Anoop and Ranjith essaying relatives named Bhaskara Varma and Dasaratha Varma, respectively.

King Fish has Mahadevan Thampi as its cinematographer while Ratheesh Vega is handling its music department. Some of the songs from the film such as En Raamazhayil and Thu Ven that were released during the lockdown had already topped the charts.

While the release of the film will be a big respite for the team, it will go up against Prithviraj Sukumaran and Nayanthara’s Gold, which has deferred its release from September 8 to September 15 or 16. Roshan Mathew and Swasika’s Chathuram is another film that is set to hit theatres on September 16. Anoop, meanwhile, is also gearing up for the release of his political thriller Varaal, which is directed by Kannan Thamarakkulam.
