Debutant director Bibin Krishna’s 21 Grams is slowly but steadily becoming this year’s sleeper hit. The movie, which only had a limited release on March 18, has seen an increase in the number of shows and its lead actor Anoop Menon, on Thursday, shared the movie was allotted 43 more screens in Kerala.
This is an impressive feat, considering that SS Rajamouli’s RRR, which has Ram Charan, NTR Jr, Alia Bhatt and Ajay Devgn in the lead, has a wide release in Kerala with more than 500 theatres set to screen the movie from March 25.
What must have worked in 21 Grams’ favour was that there were no other Malayalam reviews this week combined with the investigative thriller’s positive word-of-mouth reviews. Navya Nair’s Oruthee was probably the only other film that hit theatres last week, which could get a decent run.
21 Grams revolves around a double homicide investigation carried by crime branch officer Nanda Kishor, who himself is only just coming out of a personal tragedy. As the investigation progresses, the suspects are eliminated one by one by the killer and Nanda and his team must race against time and choose between saving the final suspect or apprehending the killer.
The film also has Leona Lishoy, Anu Mohan, G Chandunath, Ranjith, Renji Panicker and Jeeva Joseph in pivotal roles. Earlier this week, Anoop in a press meet in Kozhikode had called out the hypocrisy among theatre owners for not allotting theatres to Malayalam cinema. 21 Grams had only three shows in Kozhikode.
This, however, is expected to continue with Vijay’s Beast and Yash’s KGF: Chapter 2 also set for release in April. No new major Malayalam releases have been slotted till April 28 in Kerala due to the same reason.
