Antony came out in theatres on December 1 last year. And it took many by surprise the way the audience received the movie at the box office.
Malayalam actor Joju George's latest solo movie Antony made its OTT debut on Friday. The film is now available for streaming on Amazon Prime Video, almost seven weeks after its initial theatrical debut last year.
Typically, new Malayalam movies start streaming after completing a four-week box office window. Even though the other stakeholders, including distributors and exhibitors, in the Malayalam film industry continue to protest against the short theatrical window, the producers do what they deem best for their investments. However, of late, some Malayalam movies have shown more willingness to stay in theatres longer than four weeks before arriving on streaming.
How did Antony perform at the box office?
Antony came out in theatres on December 1 last year. And it took many by surprise the way the audience received the movie at the box office. Unlike most films of its category, Antony managed to make an impression both in terms of commercial and critical success. While it received mostly positive reviews from the critics, it also exceeded expectations in terms of ticket sales in Kerala.
Antony made its box office debut by grossing more than Rs 1.25 crore in Kerala alone. It may not seem a significant achievement at a time when the opening of certain movies is upwards of Rs 100 crore in India. However, for a Malayalam movie of this nature, this opening is substantial. Also, the Malayalam filmmakers are very prudent when it comes to spending on promotions. Many new Malayalam films don't usually receive a huge promotional boost before their theatrical debuts. Antony managed to achieve its success purely on the strength of good word of mouth post its release.
By the end of the second week, Antony had grossed more than Rs 8 crore at the Kerala box office, achieving the status of a hit.
