Mulk (2018), directed by Anubhav Sinha, was a watershed moment in his career when he decided to direct more socially conscious stories rather than commercially produced ones. Featuring Rishi Kapoor, Taapsee Pannu, and Prateik Babbar, this courtroom drama marked the filmmaker's artistic rebirth. Several have dubbed it "Anubhav Sinha 2.0," and it produced a string of highly regarded social and political dramas like Article 15, Thappad, Anek, and Bheed. Seven years later, he is all over the legal system once again, this time for a project quite similar to Mulk.
As per reports in Peeping Moon, Sinha is helming a courtroom drama with Pannu as the leading lady. The filmmaker is trying to buck the tendency of pointless sequels with this new movie, which shares some themes with Mulk but is not being marketed as Mulk 2. His other works have all promised to address urgent social concerns and provide audiences with a message that will make them think. This film is supposedly no different. The audience can anticipate another bold narrative from Sinha, true to his trademark bravery in tackling subjects that many filmmakers avoid.
Mulk and Thappad will follow the third film starring Pannu and directed by Sinha. Additional casting is currently happening for other important parts, but the ensemble cast already includes veteran actors Kumud Mishra and Manoj Pahwa, who have worked with the filmmaker on several occasions. Producing the film under his Benaras Media Works label is Sinha himself. In April, production is expected to start in Delhi.
Shooting on Pannu's upcoming action film Gandhari, set in India and to be available on Netflix, will wrap, after which she will begin shooting for Sinha's film. In the Kanika Dhillon-penned film, the actor will be portraying the role of a dogged mother's search for her abducted daughter. This year also sees the release of her romantic comedy Woh Ladki Hai Kahan, which co-stars Pratik Gandhi.
