Malayalam actor Basil Joseph’s latest movie Ponman, despite not making as much noise as some of the bigger Malayalam releases in the past two months, is still winning hearts. The latest to praise the film is Bollywood director Anurag Kashyap, who has admitted that he is a huge fan of South cinema .
In a recent post, the actor-director, who was also part of the Malayalam movie Rifle Club that is currently streaming on Netflix and had presented Manju Warrier’s Footage last year, was all praise for art director-turned-filmmaker Jothish Sankar’s Ponman.
Anurag Kashyap on Ponman: So original and so much fun
In a social media post, Anurag wrote on the drama-thriller, which is based on GR Indugopan’s novella Nalanju Cheruppakaar, “So original and so much fun. Basil Joseph has to be one of the coolest everyman actor we have today. Loved it.”
Basil has been lauded for his performance as PP Ajesh, a gold lender, who values his integrity over anything. The movie, which also has Lijomol Jose, Anand Manmadhan and Sajin Gopu in pivotal roles, hit theatres on January 30.
The film, set in Kollam, revolves around the incidents after a 25 sovereign of gold that Ajesh lends to Steffi Graf and her brother Terrance Bruno’s family isn’t paid for in full. Ajesh is then forced to pursue the bride and her brute of a husband, Mariyano, to a notorious village, in a bid to get back what is owed.
Ponman turns gold at the box office
Though Ponman didn’t quite pull of the heist that some of the recent Malayalam movies such as Marco or Asif Ali’s Rekhachithram did at the box office, the drama-thriller still managed to rake in a decent Rs 5.23 Cr from India markets in a week of its theatrical run.
This week onwards, the movie will see competition from Ajith Kumar’s Vidaamuyarchi as well as Joju George and Suraj Venjaramoodu’s Narayaneente Moonnaanmakkal.
