Aparna Sen's directorial The Rapist is gettings its world premiere at the 26th Busan International Film Festival to be held in October this year. The film features Konkona Sen Sharma, Arjun Rampal and Tanmay Dhanania in the lead roles. The film reunites mother-daughter duo Aparna and Konkona on the big screen. Talking about the premise of The Rapist, the makers have described it as 'the journey of three protagonists and how their lives get entwined because of one horrific incident.'
The gut-wrenching film also looks beyond the obvious crime, and explores not only how it affects the survivors and perpetrators of the crime, but also delves into how one’s idealistic views are drastically altered when the truth hits uncomfortably close to home.
In a statement, Aparna said, "Apart from trying to explore the reasons why our society turns out rapists in such numbers and looking into the inequalities in our social system that are responsible for giving rise to criminals, what drew me to this story, was the psychology of the three protagonists. Stripping off the layers and the carefully built up facades to get at the person underneath was a fascinating process."
The Rapist will be screened during the A Window on Asian Cinema section at the film festival. Moreover, the film is also nominated in the prestigious Kim Jiseok Award category along with seven other films which will be announced during the closing ceremony.
The film is produced by Applause Entertainment in association with Quest Films Pvt. Ltd. The shoot of The Rapist was wrapped in April this year after a quick shoot that kickstarted at the start of 2021.
The actors including Arjun and Konkona have been sharing several BTS photos on their social media pages from the set clicked during the shoot.
