Aquaman 2 projected to suffer an opening even less than The Flash – Will the DCU flick touch the rock bottom too soon?

The superhero culture has not had a very rejoicing year in 2023, even though it was one of the busiest for it. Both Marvel Cinematic Universe and DCEU (now DCU) have seen multiple releases but it turns out that not much has worked in the favour of either, with movies struggling to see decent numbers during their theatrical runs. While Marvel will end the year with What If...?, which is technically a series, DCU will mark the end with Aquaman And The Lost Kingdom. And the opening projections now don’t seem merry. 

Aquaman And The Lost Kingdom, aka Aquaman 2, has been one of the most controversial and spoken-about movies through production, post-production, and now as it gears up to hit the big screen during Christmas week. It seems like negative news about the sequel, whose predecessor earned a billion dollars, has affected the Jason Momoa and Amber Heard-starrer. As per latest reports, Aquaman 2 might make even less than The Flash on opening day. 

When it's run ended, The Flash was one of the worst performers in the superhero realm. So you can guess the severity of the situation. As per Comic Book Movie, Aquaman And The Lost Kingdom will make $50 million in the opening week. What is surprising is that the movie is getting a four-day opening and still has a projection that is too low.

The Flash, which was projected for a $70 million opening, earned only $55 million in the opening week. Aquaman (2017) made $67.8 million in the opening weekend but went on to make $1.1 billion worldwide when its run ended. Perhaps Aquaman And The Lost Kingdom might perform like the earlier film. However, that seems impossible at this point.
