When the Arjun Sarja, JD Chakravarthy and Radhika Kumaraswamy film by Sameer was announced way back in 2017, it was initially called Kontract in Kannada. The film, which was to get a four-language release was called Iruvar Oppantham in Tamil and Iddaru in Telugu. Completed before the pandemic, the makers of the film have been trying to get it in theatres and will finally do so this Friday. Kontract, which was rechristened Oppanda late last year, has been written and produced by director Sameer. The film also has Sony Charishta and Vishwanath in pivotal roles and has music by Subhash Anand, while Aamir Lal is the cinematographer.

Oppanda, which also has Bollywood actor Aamir Khan’s brother Faisal Khan on the cast, is one of five Kannada films (Love Mocktail 2, Four Walls & Two Nighties, Preethigibbaru, Rowdy Baby) releasing this week. Despite the star cast, though, in the run up to the film’s release, there have been absolutely no promotional events and the cast and crew have not been publicizing it either. Makes one wonder why the film is getting a theatrical release after all. A filmmaker, on condition of anonymity, told us that in the next several weeks a lot of old films that were ready before the pandemic, as well as those by smaller and relatively unknown teams will make it to theatres, even if it is with limited shows to boost their marketability for satellite and digital rights.
