Zack Snyder’s Army of The Dead will get a prequel and an animated series. The filmmaker’s Army of The Dead, which released on Netflix last month, was praised for its fresh style of storytelling and spin on classic zombie movies.

Rumours had been making the rounds about a sequel to Army of The Dead but the filmmaker had not confirmed this. Now, Netflix has announced that the next instalment will actually be a prequel. Titled Army of Thieves, the prequel will explore the early days of the zombie outbreak that wreaked havoc. The film will feature Matthias Schweighöfer reprising his role as Dieter. He will be joined by Game of Thrones’ Nathalie Emmanuel as Gwendoline. Schweighöfer is also expected to direct the film.

Speaking at a recent roundtable to GamesRadar+ and other journalists, Schweighöfer confirmed that editing is in its final stages – filming wrapped in December 2020 and that it’s going to be a “heist film and it will be a very, very big one with scenes you’ve never seen before”.

But wait - there's more good news for Snyder's zombieverse fans. If a timeline of the fictional world is looked at, Army of the Dead movies have come late into the narrative. What happened before the remaining undead got confined to Las Vegas? This question will be answered in an animated prequel series titled Lost Vegas that will have Dave Bautista, Ella Purnell, Ana de la Reguera, Tig Notaro and Omari Hardwick reprise their roles from the live-action Army of the Dead.

Lost Vegas will focus on Scott Ward's origin story as a soldier in the zombie wars, as was hinted in Army of the Dead's opening credits. Two episodes of this animated series will be directed by Snyder himself.

Reguera said to GamesRadar+ in a roundtable interview that watching Lost Vegas will only add to our appreciation for Army of the Dead.

“You'll see a lot of our backstory, how everything started, what was our relationship, what we used to do before. You’ll get more context of our characters,” she said. “And I'm excited about that. Because then you see the movie again, you'll understand a lot more – more of the story and more of the relationship between them.”

An official confirmation on the release date of Lost Vegas is awaited.
