As Rajinikanth’s Coolie drops on OTT, netizens point out glaring errors in Lokesh Kanagaraj film

Coolie, the much-hyped Lokesh Kanagaraj film led by Superstar Rajinikanth, turned out to be quite the dampener when it eventually made its way to theatres. A routine revenge drama packed with actors from across industries, Coolie was widely panned by audiences, who reckoned that Lokesh had squandered a massive opportunity that he had with Rajinikanth. Amid such scathing feedback, Coolie found its way to OTT within a month of its theatrical release, dropping on Amazon Prime Video on September 11.

Since the theatrical release and now, more so with the OTT outing, audiences have been pointing out glaring inconsistencies and errors that made it past Lokesh’s ‘quality control’ and on to the screen. 

Here are some of the Coolie mistakes that have been discussed…

• Why would anyone have an engagement at a sea port other than to provide a set up for an item number? Cue: Monica song
• Rajashekhar’s (Sathyaraj) invention is said to be so complicated that only he can operate it, with minimal assistance from his daughter, Preethi (Shruti Haasan). After his death, Preethi says that she has no idea how to use it, yet, Deva (Rajinikanth), figures it out in a jiffy. No one in Simon’s (Nagarjuna) camp picks it up, but Kalyani (Rachita Ram) does.
• Simon’s repeated failure to identify the man who killed his father, Deva. Despite multiple meetings and face-to-face conversations, all that Simon feels is a sense of familiarity, but until the very end, he just can’t place where he’s seen Deva before. This despite the fact that he was a teenager when his father died at the hands of Deva.

• When Deva gets Dayal (Soubin Shahir) to let Preethi go, after threatening to use the incinerator chair on Kalyani, the conversation is over video call and Preethi would have caught a glimpse of Kalyani in the chair. Yet, when Kalyani pretends to be a Deva associate who’s come to pick her up from the railway station, Preethi goes along with her without a second thought.
• After escaping from Dayal’s captivity, why does Preethi have a road-side picnic?
• Given that earning Simon’s trust is no easy task and that he is cautious about letting anyone into his inner circle, how did Dayal manage to fool him for many years? What gave Dayal away eventually?
• Despite having 19 of his ‘fighter’ coolies at his mansion in hiding, why doesn’t Deva send a couple of them to bring Preethi safely to him?

• Deva’s ‘confusion’ about which one of Rajashekhar’s daughters is actually his child. Considering that Deva has not been in touch with Rajashekhar for 3 decades and that Preethi is the oldest of them, anyone with even basic mathematics and logic understanding can put two and two together.
