Actor Ashish Verma, soon to appear in the web series Court Kacheri, found a few high moments in 2025. He started the year by getting married to his best friend of 16 years, Ronjini Chakraborty (Tumbbad, Lalbazaar, Article 15), and now, as the year is about to come to an end, his re-association with TVF is very close to streaming. Court Kacheri, scheduled for release on SonyLIV on August 13, is already released on August 12. The series is the story of a renowned lawyer and how his son does not wish to carry on the legacy but is left with no other choice. Ashish plays the role of the son in the series. He discusses his re-association, working on the project, the nepotism debate and much more with OTTplay.

Ashish Verma on associating with Court Kacheri and more

Firstly, congratulations. This has been the year you finally got hitched to your best friend of 16 years. How has life changed since? Is life a little easier being married to someone from the same profession, since they understand the demands that come with being an actor?

It is the same, because we were in a live-in relationship for 16 years. Our families were also aware. So, if anything has changed, it has changed for the government - that they have another married couple on the list. I have a marriage certificate, but yeah. Life is great, yaar. She's an actor, I'm an actor. We both understand our profession. Like you said, she's my best friend.

In times when nepotism is at its peak in Bollywood, comes an OTT show about the frustration of trying to follow the same profession as your family. What do you think about that?

The story is about the father wanting his son to be a lawyer, but the son doesn't want that. There's also a line in the show that questions what is wrong if a father wants his son to learn what he was taught. That's the perspective of the father, mother or guardian. It's totally fine if they have worked so hard to make a business of their own. The fact that they express their desire about how it would be nice if the legacy could be carried forward is good. But yeah, forcing someone to be something they don't desire is weird. It's not cool. That's what the whole fight is. 'Everyone deserves an opportunity to be whatever they want to be,' is a message on the show, and I strongly relate to it.

What about Court Kacheri was it that made you want to say yes to the project?

It was TVF, it's written well and I had a leading role. So, there was no reason to turn down the offer. Yeh toh karna hi tha. I always make sure that there's a certain degree of quirk that I add to the role. If you add some humour to serious talks as well, it reaches more people. Otherwise, at times, it becomes too intense and that defeats the entire purpose. So, I like adding those elements to the show. It was a no-brainer for me. I simply wanted to be a part of the series. The collaboration was long overdue. I worked with them almost a decade back. We would often talk about our comeback, and it is finally here!

Tell me about re-associating with TVF. What remained the same, what changed?

TVF has consistently given us better stories. That has not changed. The work culture has not changed either. They are all still fully passionate. Ruchi Arun, the director of Court Kacheri, is my childhood friend. So, there was a comfort zone.

While Court Kacheri appears to be fun, did you fear that there might be consequences in trying to talk about the law system? Have you guys had to face something so far, or had to consult someone to ensure that while keeping the show light-hearted, there's nothing that appears like an insult?

When the show was written and while it was made, we consciously ensured that there was a legal team who was in the loop, and there's absolutely no intention whatsoever to show the legal system in any low or bad light. It is always shown with utmost respect. The problem is the perspective of the characters. That is what the show is about - how they drew it. It's not a commentary about the system but how the protagonist is looking at it, and how he's translated it - that's the mystery of the show. Utmost care has been taken to show the judiciary with utmost respect.

What after Court Kacheri?

I have one more film lined up, and it is quite exciting. Unfortunately, I cannot share more details on that at this point.
