Actress Ammu Abhirami, who played a pivotal role in director Vetrimaaran's critically-acclaimed blockbuster Asuran, plays the female lead in Ulaganathan Chandrasekaran's Kudhukalam, a film based on real-life incidents.
Sources close to the unit say that Kudhukalam, which is under production, is based on incidents that happened in Tirupur, known the world over for garment production. "Most of the film has been shot there," the source adds.
Produced by M Suhinbabu for Rat & Cat Pictures, the film will be about the struggles of a youngster looking to fulfil promises he's made to his dad.
Ulaganathan Chandrasekaran, who has worked as an assistant director to Durai Senthilkumar in films like Kaaki Sattai and Ethir Neechal, has also worked as co-director in films like Kodi and Pattas.
Actor Balamurugan plays the lead. Apart from him, Kavitha Bharathi, Vijay TV fame Sanjeevi, and Nakkalites fame Aneesh, Manmohith, Metti Premi and producer M Suhinbabu will all feature in the film.
Ammu Abhirami, who's currently occupied with Cooku With Comali, a popular reality show, has Battery, in her kitty; which has music by GV Prakash. The film is a story of a cop who tries to expose a medical scam. While Senguttuvan plays the male lead (cop), Abirami plays his love interest.
Ammu Abhirami is happy to do supporting roles, although she's struggling to make her mark as the female lead. "When you are acting in supporting roles, you don’t need to be concerned about the big picture. You only have to give your role, however big or small, the best shot. But I believe that if you’re true to your craft, then you can overcome any hurdle," she said in an interview with a leading English daily.
The actress believes that for people like her, who are still on the lookout for opportunities, OTT platforms may be a great opening. She says, “It is a common sight where we find people watching movies or episodes from shows anytime during the day with the push of a button. This reach has widened and targets audiences of all age groups.”
She adds, “These platforms can never be as effective as watching a movie in the theatre, but it could be a beginning for exploring opportunities that we have never had before.”
