Ayushmann Khurrana made his Bollywood debut 12 years back in Vicky Donor. The actor worked with Yami Gautam and they both marked their debut in the film industry. The two were already working on TV – Ayushmann on reality TV Roadies and Yami Gautam on TV shows – and it was their first time working in a movie together. However, Ayushmann and Yami knew each other since childhood and were actually shocked to find out that they are working together and more so, making their Bollywood debut together.
How Ayushmann knew Yami
Ayushmann revealed to Mashable that his first internship was with Yami Gautam’s father. “So I know her since childhood,” he said. Ayushmann had also worked on a documentary on Bulleh Shah, which was directed by Yami’s father. They were shocked to work together.
Their iconic Bollywood debut
While Yami was finalized to play the female lead in Shoojit Sircar’s Vicky Donor, there was no male lead who wanted to take up the role thinking we live in a regressive society. Vicky plays a sperm donor, and Ayushmann, who was waiting for a debut project after rejecting six films, jumped on the opportunity. Both Ayushmann and Yami had to unlearn what they learnt on TV (not to be too dramatic or look at the camera) in order to be ready for their debut film. The movie was also the first time that John Abraham turned a producer and it worked out well for everybody.
In the same interview, Ayushmann revealed that the makers were confident that Vicky Donor would be critically acclaimed but they did not expect it to become as iconic as it is today. Ayushmann expected to be a niche actor but thanks to the movie, he paved the way for and is now a mainstream actor known for social comedy films and getting out of that box from time-to-time.
