Thamma is the newest instalment in Maddock Films' popular horror-comedy series, and its release is expected to bring further surprises to fans. Dinesh Vijan produces the film, which features a star-studded ensemble including Ayushmann Khurrana, Rashmika Mandanna, and Nawazuddin Siddiqui.

Thamma production and franchise context

"Thamma" is produced by Amar Kaushik and directed by Aditya Sarpotdar. Stree, Bhediya, Stree 2, and Munjya are all part of the franchise's established mythology, and this new installment is expected to add to it by including folklore, humour, and emotional depth. The series has blossomed into one of the most commercially different movie universes in Hindi cinema since the surprise success of Stree seven years ago.

Films such as Andhadhun and Article 15 have established Khurrana's reputation, while Thamma is his debut in a 100% fantasy film. The actor opened up about the lengthy process of making the film. "We’ve been jamming on this for the past four or five years," he pointed out to Variety. The actor further shared, "It started as a one-liner during the pandemic, and now it’s a full-fledged script. I call it the most sought-after universe in Hindi cinema."

Ayushmann Khurrana details his character

Khurrana also said, "I play a Betal [a vampiric spirit from Indian folklore], and the comedy and emotion come from how an ordinary guy deals with supernatural powers. It’s less horror and more comedy, romance and action — the first romantic film of the Maddock horror comedy universe." After saying, "We’ve seen ghosts and spirits before, but nothing like Betals in Hindi cinema," he went on to explain the character's function within the series. He revealed Thamma means "the supreme one" or "the Sarvasrisht Betal".

Mandanna has spoken highly of her desire to become a part of the established world. The film's ability to evoke both its cultural heritage and modern aesthetic appealed to her in particular.

Rashmika Mandanna's enthusiasm for rooted and swag characters

"When I heard ‘Thamma’ the first time, I knew I had to be part of this universe," said Mandanna. The actor told the entertainment portal, "These are such rooted characters in our Indian culture, but at the same time they have such swag. There are no references — you’re creating these characters in your mind and completely surrendering to your team. I’m as surprised by the outcome as the audience will be."

An actor known for his dramatic roles, Siddiqui also spoke about the change of tone that the film marks for him. "I wasn’t expecting this kind of character," Siddiqui remarked. For him, as an actor, it's an opportunity to try something different and push himself. His curiosity about his role in this universe is piqued.

Thamma as a 'genesis' film

"Since it’s a Genesis film, it carries the common thread forward but takes it somewhere new," Khurrana said, confirming the film's unique position.

Thamma will hit theatres on October 21, 2025, right in the middle of the Diwali festive week.
