Oscar-winning sound designer Resul Pookutty kicked off a controversy with his comment about SS Rajamouli’s blockbuster RRR, calling it a “gay love story” – something that a lot of the Western audience too had said about the film after it released on Netflix a month ago.

Resul’s comment, however, didn’t go down well with Baahubali producer Shobu Yarlagadda, who called out the sound designer for his comments about the movie, which had gone on to gross about Rs 1,200 crore at the worldwide box office.

Resul was replying to a tweet by filmmaker and friend Munish Bhardwaj who termed the NTR Jr and Ram Charan-starrer “garbage” after watching its first 30 minutes, which apparently was hailed by the audience in theatres. Shobu took to Twitter to call the award-winning sound designer out, saying that he didn’t think RRR is a gay love story as Resul had mentioned. “But even if it was, is “gay love story” a bad thing?” he asked. “Extremely disappointed that someone of your accomplishments could stoop so low!”

In reply to Shobu’s irate tweet, Resul said that he agrees totally to the producer’s viewpoint that there was nothing wrong even if it was a gay story. He further explained that he merely pointed out to his friend that the banter already exists in public domain. “There is no stooping factor in this. You don’t have to take it seriously Shobu,” tweeted the BAFTA-winning sound designer, adding that he meant no offense.

Meanwhile, after all the hullabaloo that Resul’s reply to Munish caused, the latter tweeted to the sound designer that his tweeting skills are dismal compared to the artiste he is. Resul wasn’t the first popular Indian celebrity to call the movie a ‘gay story’. Ram Gopal Varma took to Twitter last month to say that the protagonists of the movie were “so gay”.
