Baapu is yet another village drama that was extensively promoted by its makers. Released on February 21, 2025, the family drama, unfortunately, ended up as a massive flop at the box office. Despite its theatrical failure, the film has now found a new lease of life on OTT.
The latest update is that Hotstar has bagged the digital rights to Baapu and will begin streaming the film from March 7, 2025. This means Baapu will be available on OTT within just two weeks of its theatrical release. Reports suggest that Hotstar has spent a considerable amount to acquire the film’s digital rights, which is why the streaming release has been scheduled so soon.
Veteran actor Brahmaji played the lead role in this film, which was directed by Daya. Before the film’s theatrical release, the makers screened it for several industry insiders and members of the press, hoping to generate positive buzz. However, these efforts did not work in the film’s favor, as Baapu failed to impress audiences.
The film features Amani, the popular yesteryear actress, as the female lead. The story revolves around a struggling farmer who is burdened with heavy debt. In a desperate attempt to repay the money, he and his wife hatch a ghastly plan—they decide to kill the farmer’s father to claim insurance money. However, their plan leads to unexpected consequences, forcing them to confront their mistakes.
While the premise of the film had promise, many felt that director Daya’s execution fell short. The emotional depth of the protagonist realizing his mistake was not effectively portrayed. However, Amani’s performance was one of the major highlights, earning praise from critics.
Interestingly, the film also incorporates a thrilling subplot involving a mysterious idol that plays a key role in the story. Meanwhile, Balagam-fame Sudhakar Reddy, who plays the father, provided decent comic relief, though his character was not fully utilized.
With Hotstar securing the rights, the OTT version will feature deleted scenes, aiming to enhance the viewing experience. It remains to be seen how the film will fare on streaming platforms. Stay tuned for more updates on Baapu.
