There is no way Varun Dhawan’s Baby John is seeking redemption at the box office. The movie, starring Dhawan as an action star and touted as his foray into a new stream of cinema, has mostly remained a flat line on the graph that was expected to rise higher. Directed by Kalees and produced by Atlee, the film was one of the most anticipated of the year and had kept audiences waiting for a while. The anticipation somewhat reflected in the opening day numbers but failed to sustain beyond that, as the movie continues to earn below the Rs 5 crore range daily. However, no one involved could have anticipated such a steep fall by Day 10, with collections dropping to lakhs.
You read that right. Varun Dhawan's Baby John has suffered the biggest drop of its run so far on Day 10, earning just Rs 0.45 crore (Rs 45 lakhs) at the domestic box office. This is a very low figure for a high-budget film. The number reflects a significant drop of over 50% from Day 9, where the film earned Rs 1 crore domestically. Such a drop does not bode well for the movie’s chances of achieving any notable milestone during its theatrical run.
The total collection of Baby John after Day 10 now stands at Rs 36.85 crore. The movie recorded 10.86% Hindi occupancy in theaters on Day 10, with overall occupancy rates of 5.87% for morning shows, 10.18% for afternoon shows, 10.81% for evening shows, and 16.58% for night shows. The film appears to have hit rock bottom, with little hope for redemption.
It’s true. Baby John released during the highly successful box office run of Pushpa 2: The Rule. Additionally, Mufasa: The Lion King, released on December 20, 2024, has managed to surpass Rs 100 crore in India. In contrast, Baby John has failed to cross Rs 50 crore in nearly 10 days, which is indeed concerning. According to a report by TOI, the movie has been removed from many single-screen theaters.
Single-screen theater owners have decided to pull down Baby John as Pushpa 2 and Mufasa: The Lion King dominate the screens. The report claims that the Varun Dhawan-led movie has lost approximately 2,500 shows, which is a significant setback for the makers. This loss of visibility will further impact the movie’s performance during its remaining days in theaters.
Based on current performance trends, experts estimate that the movie may struggle to reach Rs 45-50 crore in total domestic earnings by the end of its theatrical run. Globally, the action film might wrap up around Rs 75 crore. These figures fall far short of what the movie needs to break even, let alone make a profit.
