Babygirl by Halina Reijn is currently streaming on Prime Video in India following a successful theatrical run and a period as a premium rental. The sensual thriller from 2024, which was well-received at festivals across the world, has been available for rental on several streaming services for a while now. The controversial film is now available to Indian viewers with a regular Prime Video membership starting this weekend.
Babygirl is produced, written, and directed by Halina Reijn. Nicole Kidman plays Romy, a powerful and charismatic CEO whose carefully planned life starts to fall apart when she has an affair with Samuel, her much younger intern, played by Harris Dickinson (known for Triangle of Sadness and The Iron Claw). Promising newcomer Sophie Wilde and seasoned actor Antonio Banderas co-star in the film.
Babygirl premiered at the 81st Venice International Film Festival on August 30, 2024, and it was a smashing success. Nicole Kidman was named Best Actress and took home the coveted Volpi Cup. A24 released it to theatres nationwide on December 25 after it had a September screening at the Toronto International Film Festival. With a relatively low budget of $20 million, the picture became a worldwide smash hit, earning $64.4 million and a spot on the National Board of Review's Top Ten Films of 2024 list. With her Best Actress award from the Board, Nicole Kidman cemented her position as one of the most talked-about performers of the year.
The unabashed depiction of a romance characterised by a 24-year age difference—Romy is 49 and Samuel is 25—is one of the most remarkable aspects of the film. Actually, there was a much bigger age gap between Dickinson and Kidman—29 years. Babygirl sought to confront gender and age bias in relationships, according to Reijn, whose narratives are recognised for challenging boundaries. She told reporters that it should be totally normalised for age gaps to shift and for women to have diverse relationships as they are no longer confined.
After working with Kidman, Dickinson reflected on the experience and said that the film's intense tension was heightened by their minimal pre-production contact. Their on-screen relationship was more genuine because it allowed them to build trust and approach each other with kindness.
