The 77th British Academy Film Awards (BAFTAs) was held on February 18, 2024, at the Royal Festival Hall in London's Southbank Centre. Also referred to as ‘British Oscars’, the BAFTAs celebrate the best in filmmaking from around the world, recognizing outstanding achievements in both British and international films released in the previous year.

Oppenheimer's triumphs

This year, Christopher Nolan, Cillian Murphy and Robert Downey Jr. made history at the BAFTAs, with Nolan winning Best Director and Murphy winning Best Actor for their work on Oppenheimer. This marked a significant achievement for Nolan, who had never won a BAFTA before, despite being nominated twice previously.

While Greta Gerwig’s Barbie dominated the box office by being the highest grossing film of the year, Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer has been the toast of awards season. The film swept the major categories at the Golden Globes, winning five awards including - Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Supporting Actor, Best Original Score, It continued its winning streak at the BAFTAs, taking home Best Actor and Best Director once again.

Christopher Nolan's previous BAFTA nominations

In 2018, Nolan found himself achieving for the top honours in both Best Picture and Best Director categories at the British Academy Awards for his film Dunkirk (2017). However, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri (2017) took home the best accolades, while Guillermo del Toro claimed the directorial trophy for The Shape of Water (2017).

Oppenheimer story

The story of Oppenheimer is the biography of J. Robert Oppenheimer, the father of the atomic bomb. It revolves around World War II. In 1942, General Leslie Groves Jr. recruited Oppenheimer to lead the Manhattan Project, a clandestine effort to develop the world's first atomic weapon. For years, Oppenheimer and his team of brilliant scientists toiled in secrecy, culminating in the Trinity test on July 16, 1945, the first detonation of a nuclear device. This event forever altered the course of history, ushering in the nuclear age.
