Bhoothakaalam, starring Shane Nigam and Revathy, is one of the most intriguing horror films from Malayalam, which even fetched a Kerala Film State Award for its lead actress. Filmmaker Rahul Sadasivan helmed this psychological horror movie, which will stay with you long after the credits roll. But it is critical acclaim notwithstanding, Shane Nigam has said that he would not like to do another film like Bhoothakaalam, and the Balti actor has revealed the reason as to why.
Bhoothakaalam is a 2022 Malayalam film, which brilliantly narrates the tale of a woman and her son, with a horror backdrop. Actor Shane Nigam played the son Vinu, who lives with his mother Asha (played by veteran actress Revathy). But in a recent interview with The New Indian Express, Shane Nigam explained that he would not want to do another Bhoothakaalam-like movie because the process was so intense.
“Not just the role, but the whole experience. You give a lot, mentally and emotionally, and it takes a toll,” the actor explained. While stating that there is a kind of darkness in the character, Shane said that the emotional state lingers.
You can stream Bhoothakaalam on SonyLiv via OTTplay Premium right now. The film follows the events after Vinu, an unemployed youth, begins to experience eerie incidents after a death in their house. But his mother, who suffers from depression, does not seem to believe in him. There is an ominous tension in the grim film. The clever writing, the taut performances and the terrific staging make this film a must-watch online.

Meanwhile, Shane Nigam is awaiting the release of his upcoming film Balti, which hits theatres on August 29, 2025, along with Fahadh Faasil-led Odum Kuthira Chadum Kuthira, as an Onam release. The other major release Mohanlal-starrer Hridayapoorvam, helmed by Sathyan Anthikad. Kalyani Priyadarshan’s Lokah-Chapter One: Chandra is also entering the Onam 2025 race at the box office.
A Malayalam-Tamil bilingual, Balti is touted to be a sports action drama.
