Bangladesh’s preparations for their much-anticipated Asia Cup 2025 Super Four contest against India were jolted on Monday as skipper Litton Das complained of back pain during practice. The opener, who has been central to Bangladesh’s batting plans, appeared uncomfortable while working on his trademark square cut and had to cut short his session.
According to team sources, Litton felt stiffness around his waist area, forcing physio staff to step in immediately. Though he was able to walk off without much visible difficulty, the management decided not to risk further strain and pulled him out of the nets.
A detailed medical assessment has been scheduled to determine the extent of the problem and his chances of featuring in the high-voltage clash. The timing of the scare is far from ideal. Bangladesh are already under pressure in the Super Four stage and facing India without their captain would be a major blow.
"We will have a look at him (Litton) today because from outside he looks quite okay, but we need to conduct a medical assessment before making a final call," a BCB official told Cricbuzz on Tuesday.
If Litton Das fails to recover in time, Bangladesh will have to rethink both leadership and batting combinations. The squad does not have a formally designated deputy which is a huge matter of concern for the team. Strategically, this uncertainty could disrupt team balance on the eve of a crucial fixture.
On the batting front, Litton’s absence would mean additional pressure on the middle order, already tasked with facing India’s varied attack led by Jasprit Bumrah and Kuldeep Yadav. His ability to anchor innings at the top and rotate strike efficiently makes him difficult to replace. The management may be compelled to shuffle the batting order or draft in a reserve opener if the skipper is sidelined.
Bangladesh fans will be anxiously awaiting updates from the medical team, hoping their captain is cleared to play. With the Asia Cup 2025 at a decisive stage, Litton’s presence could well decide whether Bangladesh can compete on equal footing against a dominant Indian side.
