Bangladesh witnesses deadly protests by students over the issue of the existing ‘quota’ system. The state has been imposing curfews and the death toll is increasing. The turmoil in the neighbouring country has affected India as well. Celebrities from Bangladesh and West Bengal are equivocally condemning the ongoing violence.
Director Mostofa Sarwar Farooki shared several photos and videos of the protest and wrote, “Friends from all over the world have reached out to know what’s happening in Bangladesh and how we are doing. Thank you for your concern. To tell you briefly, Bangladesh is seeing the biggest public uprising in the history of the country led by students. As local and international media reports, it initially started as a quota reform movement for government jobs fueled by frustration over rampant corruption, discrimination, and lack of space for any dissent. But as the government tried to handle it with an iron grip, things turned deadly. Prothom Alo reports, 27 students were killed in one single day!!! 27 young lives were taken just like that. The death toll has reached 105 till Tuesday according to AFP which might rise more. The country has been cut off from the world as the government decided to halt internet services.” Indian actress Swastika Mukherjee shared his post and wrote, “Bangladesh has been witnessing bloodshed. Students’ bloodsheds. Let there be light.”
Chanchal Chowdhury also posted. He wrote, 'I have been in the USA due to work and came back to Dhaka last night. I saw the news and was stunned. I mourn the dead. Was there no other way of solution? What was the need to shoot? Could not a peaceful solution be made without shedding blood? The entire thing was undesired, heartbreaking, unfortunate, and uncivilized. As a common person and a parent, I don't understand so much politics. But who will take the responsibility for so many youths getting killed? Will the mourning of a mother who lost her child ever end? Let this bloodshed in the name of dirty politics stop.'
Many celebrities from West Bengal, including Srijit Mukherji, Rafiath Rashid Mithila, Riddhi Sen, Anindya Chatterjee, and Kabir Suman, took to social media about the incident. Common citizens also protested the incident.
