Surprise! Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling-starrer fantasy comedy Barbie has collected around Rs 18.50 crore in its first weekend in India. This news development garners attention as it is for the first time that a Hollywood film faces no competition from any theatrical Indian movie on its day of release.
To add spark to the news, Hollywood films namely Barbie, Oppenheimer, and Mission Impossible 7 collectively together collected over Rs 78 crores at the box office in India, especially on a non-holiday weekend.
While news developments continue to swirl around these three theatrical releases, a news report by Variety claims that Greta Gerwig – the director of Barbie – has made box office history as her movie earned over $155 million dollars in its opening weekend globally, marking the biggest debut ever for a film directed by a woman.
Prior to this achievement, Captain Marvel, which was co-directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, previously held the title after earning $153 million in 2019.
The trend of Barbie’s fashion is gaining momentum in India with several Indian celebrities namely Adah Sharma, Kiara Advani and others experimenting with their ‘Barbie-inspired’ looks.
About a month ago, Warner Bros. Pictures (India) Pvt Ltd dropped the official trailer of Barbie. The caption of the official trailer video read, “Giant blowout party ✅ Planned choreography ✅ New #BarbieTheMovie Trailer ✅ Only in Theaters July 21. To live in Barbie Land is to be perfect being in a perfect place. Unless you have a full-on existential crisis. Or you’re a Ken.”
The official video has been viewed by over 52 million YouTube users till date. “This summer, if you love Barbie, then this movie is for you,” says the trailer of Barbie.
Barbie is an American fantasy film directed by Greta Gerwig and written by Gerwig and Noah Baumbach. The film stars Margot Robbie as Barbie and Ryan Gosling as Ken and follows the two on a journey of self-discovery following their existential crisis.
To add up, the film also features an ensemble cast that includes America Ferrera, Kate McKinnon, Michael Cera, Ariana Greenblatt, Simu Liu, Issa Rae, Rhea Perlman, Helen Mirren, and Will Ferrell.
