Malayalam superstar Mohanlal’s passion project Barroz hasn’t quite worked out the way he hoped. The 3D children’s fantasy film, which was reportedly made on a budget of Rs 150 Cr, is yet to cross the Rs 10 Cr landmark from the Indian box office after its first week.
According to industry trackers Sacnilk, the movie made only Rs 28 lakh on day 7, with just the Malayalam version bringing in the revenue. The Hindi and Telugu versions of the film haven’t taken off.

In an earlier interview, the marketing head of the movie, Dr Sharon Thomas, confirmed that Barroz is one of the most expensive Malayalam movies – with the team spending almost Rs 150 Cr on its making and marketing. However, this hasn’t translated into box office numbers.
Mohanlal, himself, earlier this week, responded to Barroz’s poor performance by saying that he didn’t make the film to earn money but considered it as a gift for the audience who had showered him love and appreciation for the past four-and-a-half decades.
Industry trackers estimate the movie to have a final collection of just Rs 25 Cr, which also includes box office gross from GCC countries, Europe, and the US. This will make the movie, one of the biggest flops in Mohanlal’s career. His other release in 2024, Malaikottai Vaaliban – despite gaining mixed reviews – too had resulted in a loss for the producers.
Barroz’s OTT rights have been sold to Disney+ Hotstar, which is set to release the movie on the platform in Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Hindi, and Kannada, after its theatrical run.
While Barroz and Marco had two separate genres and targeted different audience groups, the latter had crushed the Mohanlal-starrer at the Kerala box office and its Hindi and Telugu versions also did phenomenally well. On its day 13, Marco’s Hindi and Telugu earned Rs 1.20 Cr and Rs 1.15 Cr, as compared to the combined gross of Barroz’s Hindi, Tamil, and Telugu versions of just Rs 65 lakh in one week.
