This week has been special because it has been all about the penultimate episodes of the shows that have been stellar. While we have witnessed House of the Dragon Season 2’s seventh episode, closer to home there is the fifth episode of Barzakh that has aired on Zee5. The latter is a show that has found an audience gradually and is growing on them like a slow poison. A story of a dysfunctional family of the living and their quest to understand the world of the dead is a poetic exploration of tragedy, pain, and what it means to be a family. Written and directed by Asim Abbasi, the show started off as a story of a man who has almost lost his mind because he aspired to marry the ghost of his past lover. But soon we were told how this is possible but at the cost of destruction. The fifth episode established that fact even more.
Episode five, titled "The False Messiah & The Final Siege of Barzakh," served as a key to all the mysteries we have lived with thus far. The show has managed to leave us with lots of questions, and Abbasi used the latest episode to offer the answers. He is clever enough to serve you answers because episode six is where all of this walks towards its end and what happens beyond those answers because they are not the end clearly. So now we know what and who let Mehtab, we know Scheherezade’s roots, and how she is a fairy-like being amid the humans who is about to march with the commoners because she is destined to show them the way. There is the helplessness of a father, and the quest of a son.
We now know how Jabbar was the big bad so far and the cause of everything that everyone is going through in Barzakh. But Mehtab was ditched by Jabbar, who never let her have the life she was destined for after running away from the village. He rather told the entire village about her pregnancy, and they went after her to kill her. But like the fairies have always been about the women who went against social norms, they had her back. The scene where they take her away and she is alive is the heart of this episode. So now we know who Scheherezade is and what her mission has been.
The climax of the penultimate episode also captures the helplessness of Shehryar perfectly. He is a father who is looking for his son who happens to be his only family. He is a son who is in denial that he is also somewhat like his dominating, selfish father. He is also a husband who is one of the reasons why his wife had to commit suicide. All of that has now taken a toll on him together, and now he must rise above it to find Harris.
All these episodes it has been about the journey to the mountains where the fairies and Mehtab await Jafar, who is all set to unite the two worlds. Episode five is where they finally set out for the mountains to find their redemption. What is even more exciting is the fact that they all take their separate journeys to find their redemption. The spirits back home have all started to imbibe powers that we haven't seen so far, but there is some unfinished business that needs to be attended to. Episode six is all about that.
