Basil Joseph surprises Rocket Boys composer Achint Thakkar by revealing he considered him for Minnal Murali

Post the pandemic, two of the most discussed projects on OTTs were Sony LIV’s Scam 1992: The Harshad Mehta Story and Netflix’s Minnal Murali. The popularity of both the projects – one a web series and another a desi super-hero film – went on to cement the possibilities of the OTT medium and expedited a change that many thought would happen only years later.

At the recently concluded OTTplay Changemakers Awards 2023 in Mumbai, Minnal Murali’s filmmaker Basil Joseph bumped into Scam 1992 and Rocket Boys’ composer Achint Thakkar. Basil, who was also supposed to share the table with the ace composer during the event, had told us that he has been in awe of Achint’s music. While the duo didn’t meet during the award ceremony, they did bump into each other at the winner’s lounge.

Achint was the first to say that he was a huge fan of Basil’s work, especially the Tovino Thomas-starrer Minnal Murali. To this, Basil sprung a surprise, telling the ace music director that he had considered having him onboard for Minnal Murali back in 2020.

“But Minnal Murali’s music was composed before Scam 1992 had released, right?” asked Achint, to which Basil replied that there were a few portions that required re-recording and this is where he had sought to get Achint onboard.

The team had then finalised Sushin Shyam to work on the music and background score for these portions. Sushin’s work in the film is still celebrated with many urging Basil to ensure that the score is played for more portions in the planned sequel. But considering the exchange between Achint and Basil, we do hope that the duo collaborates soon for a movie.

Basil won the award for the Inspiring Filmmaker of the Year at OTTplay Changemakers Awards 2023, while Achint took home the trophy for Composer in Spotlight, for his works in Rocket Boys and Monica, Oh My Darling.
