Adah Sharma’s Bastar is finally up for release on Zee5 and OTTplay Premium. The movie was out in theatres on March 15 this year. The Sudipto Sen directorial suffered at the Box Office owing to limited release, and thus, it remains to be seen whether like Salman Khan’s Tiger 3, this movie can be a hit on OTT over theatres. Ahead of its OTT release, here’s everything you wanted to know about the movie…

What is Bastar all about?

Bastar is actually taken from the district name of Chhattisgarh. The film deals in the Naxalite–Maoist insurgency in the Bastar district of Chhattisgarh.

What is the conflict?

The conflict between the Naxalites and the Indian government, which began in 1967 with the Naxalbari uprising, is still ongoing. There are Naxal-affected areas and the places where they hold the most influence is called Red Corridor. This is in and around Chhattisgarh-Odisha and Jharkhand, Bihar and West Bengal. In their fight, the Naxalites have often targetted police and government workers. The fight is for improved rights over land and better jobs for labourers and the poor.

Naxalite-Maoist’s armed wing is called the People's Liberation Guerrilla Army (PLGA) and they are equipped with small arms. The origins are from when Communist Party of India (Marxist) split in 1967, to become Communist Party of India (Marxist–Leninist), and is now split into many smaller fractions, carrying out the attacks.

About the film’s theatrical release, its cast and crew

When it released in theatres, Bastar got as little as two screens. The negative reviews for the movie did not help it at the Box Office and eventually, the movie got the tag of ‘major Box Office bomb.’

Produced by Vipul Amrutlal Shah, the film stars Adah Sharma in the role of IPS Neerja Madhavan. It also features Indira Tiwari as Ratna, Vijay Krishna as Lanka Reddy, Shilpa Shukla as Neelam Nagpal, Yashpal Sharma as Utpal Trivedi, Subrat Dutta as Millind Kashyap, Raima Sen as Vanya Roy, Anangsha Biswas as Lakshmi and Kishor Kadam as Rajendra Karma.
