On August 28, 2024, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice premiered at the 81st Venice International Film Festival. The film was released in theatres on September 6, 2024. It made $451.9 million globally and was well-received by critics.
The monstrous "bio-exorcist" Betelgeuse, played by Michael Keaton, wants to wed a human. The fact that Betelgeuse never changes or grows as a character is important to Burton, who saw no need to change him, and star Keaton, who loved the character's politically incorrect nature, decided to keep him that way.
Winona Ryder's character, Lydia Deetz, a mother of Astrid Deetz and presenter of the Ghost House talk show. Lydia, a gothic adolescent, almost faced forced marriage to Betelgeuse. Ryder liked how her character evolved, especially in regards to her connection with daughter Astrid, from her original vision of a spinster living in the attic of the Maitland house.
Played by Catherine O'Hara, Delia Deetz is a stepmother to Lydia, Astrid, and Charles Deetz; she is also the widow of the latter, and she is the current hostess of a real art show at a gallery in SoHo. Astrid Deetz, played by Jenna Ortega, is the step-granddaughter of Delia and Lydia, who is a teenager.
Justin Theroux plays Rory, the television producer and Lydia's current boyfriend. Wolf Jackson, played by Willem Dafoe, is a detective in the Underworld who, before being slain by a live grenade, was a B movie action hero. An enigmatic soul-sucking occultist named Delores LaFerve, played by Monica Bellucci, was Betelgeuse's ex-wife. She poisoned him during the Black Plague centuries ago, and he retaliated by killing her with an axe.
