Bell Bottom: Vaani Kapoor drew inspiration from Parveen Babi and Rekha for her role

Bell Bottom’s recent theatrical release on Thursday brought some much needed respite for cinephiles who have been waiting for a big screen showcase. Popular actress Vaani Kapoor who shared the screen with Akshay Kumar in the recent action flick opened up about how she prepared to play the role of Radhika Malhotra, Akshay’s wife, in the film.

In an interview with The Times of India, the Shuddh Desi Romance actress talked about how she had delved into movies set in the 1980s, where the events of Bell Bottom also take place, so that she could study and use references for her looks from them. In the Akshay Kumar-starrer, she plays the role of the wife of a spy, a character that she calls ‘clear on paper’. With no one to call in and speak with regarding her character, Kapoor decided to do her bit to flesh out the character and breathe new life into the role, while staying true to the director’s vision as well.

Vaani Kapoor further elaborates on how she had focused on films starring Parveen Babi and Rekha, two legendary actresses who made waves in Hindi cinema during the ’80s, trying to emulate their mannerisms as well as she could. She also talked about how she and Bell Bottom director Ranjith M Tewari had sat down together and had drawn references to incorporate into her looks. Regarding her character Radhika Malhotra, Kapoor also talked about how she was a strong-headed and composed woman, despite being from that time period.

Bell Bottom is inspired from real life hijackings by Khalistani separatists that took place in the 1980s in the country. In addition to Vaani Kapoor and Akshay kumar, the film also stars Lara Dutta and Huma Qureshi in prominent roles. The action drama is produced by Pooja Entertainment and Emmay Entertainment.
