Benedict Cumberbatch is set to play the lead role in director Paul Greengrass' upcoming period drama film titled The Hood. The 'Dr. Strange' actor will play a real-life character in the form of a 14th-century farmer in the film, as per reports, who led a major political and socio-economic revolt in occurred in the year 1381 across multiple parts of England. As per The Hollywood Reporter, Benedict Cumberbatch is likely to play Wat Tyler in The Hood, who led rebels in England against the imposition of a poll tax in the country.
Paul Greengrass, known for films like 'Bourne Supremacy and Ultimatum', 'Captain Philips', and 'News of the World', will be working with Benedict Cumberbatch for the first time. Greengrass has grown in prominence over the years for his eclectic filmography and for reshaping the Bourne films along with actor Matt Damon. And with Benedict Cumberbatch's recent lead performance in Jane Campion's acclaimed film 'The Power of the Dog' earning him an Oscar nomination, The Hood has gained tremendous traction ever since the collaboration was made public.
The Hood is said to have been picked up at the 2022 edition of the Cannes Film market with CAA Media Finance and FilmNation selling the film and Cross Creek Pictures, known for films like Black Swan, Hacksaw Ridge, and American Made, is financing and producing the film. Cross Creek is also bankrolling the Katy Perry starrer animation musical The Melody.
Benedict Cumberbatch found worldwide fame for his portrayal of Sherlock Holmes in the BBC drama series Sherlock which also starred Martin Freeman as Dr. Watson. Later, he would play the titular role in Patrick Melrose, a five-episode series based on the novel by Edward St. Aubyn, and rise further in popularity as Dr. Strange in the Marvel Comic Universe. Benedict Cumberbatch received his second academy award nomination for Best Actor in 2022 for The Power of the Dog.
