British actor Benedict Cumberbatch has established himself as the face of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, taking over the mantle from Robert Downey Jr after Avengers Endgame. His portrayal of Stephen Strange aka Doctor Strange, the Sorcerer Supreme, has become a fan favorite, replacing the huge void left by Downey Jr’s departure as Iron Man. In today’s episode, we look at some of the best shows and films starring Benedict Cumberbatch, whose latest film Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness releases in theatres today.

The Power of the dog ( Netflix )

Jane Campion’s critically acclaimed film, The Power of the Dog is the first one on the list. An Oscar frontrunner this year, the film received 12 nominations, including Best Actor for Cumberbatch. Set in the 1920s the film is a western psychological drama focusing on themes such as masculinity, sexuality, grief, love, and jealousy. Kirsten Dunst, Jesse Plemons, and Kodi Smit-McPhee also essay riveting performances in the film.

The Imitation Game ( Netflix, Amazon Prime Video )

Based on the life of Alan Turing, one of the world’s most influential individuals of the 20th century, The Imitation Game chronicles the life of the brilliant mathematician. Cumberbatch essays a convincing performance as Turing, who helped save millions by deciphering secret German intelligence during WW II, and ending the war a few years early. Directed by Morten Tyldum, the film also stars Keira Knightley, Matthew Goode, and Mark Strong.

Doctor Strange ( Disney + Hotstar )

Cumberbatch’s first foray into mainstream Hollywood did not disappoint. The first Doctor Strange film released in 2016 was praised for its stunning visuals and absorbing performances by the cast, with Cumberbatch and Tilda Swinton, in particular, singled out for immense praise. The film, directed by Scott Derrickson, is an origin story of the future Sorcerer Supreme and also stars Chiwetel Ejiofor, Benedict Wong, Rachel McAdams, and Mads Mikkelsen in crucial roles.

Sherlock ( Amazon Prime Video )

The modern-day retelling of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s iconic character Sherlock Holmes is widely regarded as one of the best British TV shows of all time. The series propelled Cumberbatch to stardom for portraying the role of the world’s greatest detective with flair and conviction. Created by Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss for the BBC, the series also stars, Martin Freeman as Sherlock’s loyal friend Dr Watson, and Andrew Scott as Sherlock’s arch-nemesis James Moriarty.

Star Trek Into the Darkness ( Netflix and Amazon Prime Video )

Star Trek Into the Darkness, the sequel to the 2009 reboot of the Star Trek franchise was acclaimed by critics for its narrative, visuals, and performances by the cast. Benedict Cumberbatch plays the role of Commander John Harrison, who is eventually revealed to be the villainous Khan in disguise, a genetically engineered superhuman. The film stars Chris Pine in the lead as Captain James T. Kirk, supported by a star-studded ensemble of Zachary Quinto, Karl Urban, Zoe Saldana, Simon Pegg, John Cho, and Alice Eve. J. J. Abrams has directed the film with the screenplay co-written by Damon Lindelof.

The Courier ( Amazon Prime Video )

Set during the Cold War, the film tells the true story of a British businessman named Greville Wynne, recruited by the Secret Intelligence Service, commonly known as the MI6, to courier messages from Russia through a Russian spy named Oleg Penkovsky. Wynne is played by Cumberbatch in this 2020 spy film directed by Dominic Cooke. On its release, the film was praised for its gripping narrative and riveting performance by its lead star, Cumberbatch.
