Created by Vince Gilligan and Peter Gould, the American crime drama television series is a spin-off, prequel and a sequel to Gilligan’s previous series, the critically acclaimed Breaking Bad. The show is regarded as an excellent example of how to produce a successful prequel and spin-off of a popular series. With particular praise for its writing, acting, direction and cinematography, some critics have even deemed it superior to its predecessor. Garnering many accolades, including thirty-nine Primetime Emmy Awards, fourteen Critics’ Choice Television Awards, four Golden Globe Awards, six Screen Actors Guild Awards and a Peabody Award, the series premiere held the record for the highest-rated scripted series premiere in basic cable history, at the time of its airing.
With Bob Odenkirk, who is known for his role as Ross Grant from the 2013 American black-and-white comedy-drama road film Nebraska, essaying the lead of the series, the cast also includes Jonathan Banks, Patrick Fabian, Michael Mando, Tony Dalton, Giancarlo Esposito and two-time winner of the Satellite Award for Best Supporting Actress, Rhea Seehorn. The final season will also see guest appearances from Bryan Cranston and Aaron Paul, reprising their roles as the high school chemistry teacher turned-drug-manufacturer, Walter White, and his former student Jesse Pinkman.
The plot is set primarily in the early to the middle part of the 2000s in Albuquerque, New Mexico, where Jimmy McGill, a former con artist who tries to become a well-respected lawyer. However, he becomes an egocentric criminal defence attorney that goes by the name of Saul Goodman over the period of six years, prior to the events of Breaking Bad. The series follows McGill’s journey from working in the mailroom of his brother’s law firm, Hamlin, Hamlin & McGill (HHM), to passing the bar, becoming a public defender with low-paying clients and becoming a formidable defence attorney whose work goes from questionable to illegal. The show also explores the moral decline of retired police officer Mike Ehrmantraut (Jonathan Banks), who becomes closely affiliated with a drug cartel in order to support his granddaughter and her widowed mother.
